Discipline
At Sandra Turney Swim School above all else we want to pass on passion for swimming to all our pupils and believe we all learn faster when we are having fun. However, it must also be recognised that the swimming pool can be a dangerous environment if basic discipline is not enforced. It is rare for there to be an issue within a lesson, beyond what can be regarded as normal, age appropriate behaviour, however, when children become over excited or “test the boundaries” we do need to be able to control the situation for the safety of all concerned.
To this end we would initially ask the child to cease the disruptive behaviour and if this proved unsuccessful we would sit the child on the side of the pool for a period of 1-2 minutes. During this time we would explain the dangers of the unwanted behaviour and ask again for the behaviour to stop. This would be repeated for a maximum of three times during one 30 minute lesson before we would ask for support from the attendant parent or guardian. Should the behaviour continue beyond this stage the lesson would be terminated. Any lesson stopped in this way is chargeable.
Should it be necessary to terminate lessons on a regular basis we would speak with the parent or guardian of the child and suggest that the child takes a break from lessons. In our experience inappropriate behavior is most often caused by the child not enjoying the lessons and a break is the best option for the child as well as for the smooth running of the Swim School.
Health and safety
The Health and Safety of the pupils we teach is paramount. In the rare event of an accident occuring a full report is written and forwarded to both the Amateur Swimming Association and our Insurance company.
In the event of you or your child becoming ill we would ask you to please cancel your swimming lesson for that day. If vomiting or diahorrea is present the pool should be avoided for a period of 48 hours after the last episode of either. This is both for the health of the poorly person and also to prevent passing the illness onto any other pool user.
Child Welfare
At Sandra Turney Swim School we take the welfare and safety of children very seriously. All staff undergo an Enhanced Disclosure with the Criminal Records Bureau prior to employment and have attended training in Safeguarding and Protecting Children.
The Swim School adheres to the ASA Guidelines on Child Welfare in Swimming.
Any concerns regarding either a teacher of the Swim School or the welfare of a child attending for lessons should be reported immediately to us or directly with Swimline, the ASA’s own initiative on 0808 100 4001, or the NSPCC’s Child Protection Helpline 0808 800 5000.
